Physiological and root profile studies of four legume tree species

چکیده
It is a great challenge for researchers to select plant species in terms of their physiological and root properties for vegetation on slope. Therefore, this study was aimed to investigate the physiology and root profile of four selected tropical plants namely Leucaena leucocephala (LL), Adenanthera pavonina (AP), Peltophorum pterocarpum (PP) and Pterocarpus indicus (PI). The species studied were grown in three different types of soil; slope, clay and sandy, under greenhouse conditions. Outstanding physiological performance, as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence, the photosynthetic rate, the biomass production and growth rate were observed to be the highest in LL, followed by PP, AP and PI. In terms of the root profiles, LL exhibited a higher root length (450%), volume (500%), and root biomass (600%) than PI. The root biomass values of the species studied was highly correlated with the soil moisture content (R=0.83). Overall results suggested that L. leucocephala exhibited outstanding physiological performance and root profiles and can be a potential plant for soil reinforcement. [Saifuddin M, Normaniza O. Rambutan tree (Nepheliumlappaceum L.) is an important but a lesser known fruit tree in Ghana and has several nutritional and medicinal uses. Efforts to establish plantation of Rambutan in Ghana to ensure its sustainable use is challenged with unavailable planting materials because the seeds are recalcitrant in nature, loses viability easily when exposed to dryness. Seeds are therefore sown dire...

We conducted a glasshouse experiment as a factorial in randomized study with six replications on pasture species of Schoenoplectus triqueter in Gonbad Kavoos University from 2012-2013. Treatments included height waterlogging in four levels (control, equal to the water surface, 10 cm below the water surface, 20 cm below the water surface) and waterlogging period over three levels (10, 20 and 30...
متن کاملStress Response of Dominant Forest Tree Species South of the Caspian Sea in Relation to Soil from Coast to Upland
Distribution and growth of plant species is affected by many factors including abiotic (topography, altitude and soil) and biotic (root symbiosis) factors. In light of global warming, recent findings advocate microhabitats and micro-conditions of the root zone and canopy ambiance as determining factors in sustaining of plant populations. Although, occurrence of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) and non...
